LEAGOLOGY

We had the same result. Why did they get more points than me?

Because we were less sure about them. The less we know about someone, the more each result moves them.

Everyone's points come with a measure of how sure we are about them. That's the small ± number next to your points.

Someone new, or someone who hasn't played for a while, has a big ±. We're still working them out, so each result moves them a lot. Someone who plays every month has a small ±, so each result moves them a little.

An example

Jo has played for a year. Kim joined last month. They both beat the same player by the same score. Kim gets more points than Jo, because one more win tells us a lot more about Kim than it does about Jo.

It's the same when you lose to someone new: you lose fewer points, because we're not yet sure how good they are.
